By upgrading the brakes on your Dana 80 from drum to disc, you can save a substantial amount of money over its lifespan and enjoy superior stopping power.
Disc brakes will help you stop your car more quickly and with less pedal pressure, plus they require less upkeep and repairs.
Brake Booster
The brake booster is an essential element of braking systems, particularly high-speed super or hypercars that must stop abruptly or decelerate rapidly. Brake boosters multiply the force from a driver’s foot and direct it through the master cylinder to the calipers that apply pressure to wheels – helping drivers come to a complete stop much more quickly.
When the brake pedal is depressed, vacuum created by air rushing into the intake manifold pulls on a diaphragm in the booster. This diaphragm is separated into two chambers and pulls against one side while creating an atmospheric pressure differential.
The added force from a booster pushes the piston in the master cylinder harder than without it, increasing braking force and making modulation easier. Runout, or when a booster can no longer add additional force, usually reaches about 90 percent of maximum braking capacity.
Caliper Brackets
A brake caliper bracket is an integral part of your brake system, responsible for holding together the calipers when applied. Therefore, its proper upkeep and alignment are paramount.
The ideal caliper brackets mount directly to the steering knuckle and offer a surface for brake pads to stop against. They’re constructed to withstand sideways rotation of the calipers, helping ensure they remain securely in their place.
Brake caliper brackets are useful because they act as a protective sleeve to shield your brake rotor bores from corrosion caused by water and road salt. When one or more of these sleeve bores become severely corroded, you’ll need to replace your caliper bracket – an efficient way to save money and time while improving brake performance in your vehicle.
Brake Lines
Hydraulic brake lines are the backbone of your braking system, carrying hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder to each wheel caliper and cylinder. Over time these lines may corrode or suffer damage, leading to leaks and poor performance. Our brake lines are made from high-quality stainless steel specifically for your vehicle and come in various lengths with a unique design including a T-junction block running from diff cover out towards each caliper – an essential requirement for any brake conversion job.
Switching from drum brakes to disc brakes is the ideal way to boost stopping power and lighten your axle’s load. Fortunately, conversion to a disc-only system is straightforward, and O’Reilly Auto Parts has everything you need for success.
Brake Hoses
Brake Hoses are used to connect the brake caliper to the brake line on an axle. These hoses can be cut and re-flair for a more custom appearance or replaced with stainless steel lines for extra strength and longevity. Converting from drum brakes to disc brakes is much simpler than you might think with our complete kits which include all parts necessary for getting rid of those heavy drums.
Our BB1143-SS kit for the Dana 80 disc brake conversion includes a copper nickel axle hard line, bolt on brake line bracket, flex lines, the proper rotor to fit your original wheel studs, 3/8 thick caliper bracket and cables – all in one piece! Additionally, we offer an aluminum hub designed with stock wheel flange offset that accepts factory races, bearings and seals for an even lighter weight option.
Wheels
Switching the drum brakes on your Dana 80 to disc brakes is easier than you might think! These kits include all the parts necessary for making the change. The benefits are plentiful – better stopping power, quicker stops and much lower weight!
Convert your Dana 60 Chevy or Dodge front axle to GM metric calipers and 6 lug GM IFS rotors to drastically reduce its weight, enabling you to use 15 inch wheels on 1 ton axles!
These kits are easy to install and accept your factory races, bearings and seals. Plus they feature a rotor flange that accepts a lightweight Wilwood rotor for additional weight savings!
